Background and Organization
Asian Institute of Technology Association Nepal (AITAAN) in association with Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Bangkok, Thailand is organizing an International Conference on Knowledge Management on Sustainable Development from 11 to 13 October 2009. Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), established in 1959 in Bangkok, Thailand, is a premier institute of Asia that has produced thousands of highly skilled professionals in the fields of engineering, management and societal development. AIT has produced more than 16,000 graduates, M.Sc. and Ph.D. holders, and contributed significantly to the development of the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. There are also more than 23,000+ professionals obtained certificates, diplomas and finished various short course and tailor-made courses from the AIT extension that is especially designed to provide mid-career professionals and executives as well as vocational level professions with demand-driven continuous education, training and capacity building programs. The huge body of AIT Alumni shapes the socio-economical, political, and administrative landscapes of the region. The AIT graduates serve the region in the most significant and rather effective ways. This huge body of Alumni of the institute is organized as AIT Alumni Association (AITAA) Mother Chapter based in AIT, Bangkok closely linked with 27 National Alumni Chapters in different countries around the world.
On 8th of September 2009, AIT completes 50 years of its establishment and its Golden Jubilee Anniversary will be celebrated by various events through out the Year 2009. Such celebrations include scientific seminars, conferences, workshops, gala dinners, golf tournaments, etc. On this very auspicious occasion, AITAA Nepal Chapter together with AITAA Mother Chapter and the AIT jointly organize an International Conference on Knowledge Management for Sustainable Development in Kathmandu, to be held on 10-12, December 2009. The conference will provide a forum where the participants can make their deliberations and brainstorming on the contemporary issues related to the conference theme and sub-themes.
The theme of the Conference is “Knowledge Management”. This will be the first Alumni led International Conference, organized by AITAA Nepal Chapter with the support of AIT and AITAA mother chapter, focused on various issues in knowledge management.
The main objective of this International Conference is to provide a forum for knowledge exchange and networking between various partners and local institutions. The area of new cooperation among various stakeholders and solutions to burning issues in knowledge management is expected as an outcome from the conference. The conference will encourage academia, technical, managerial, municipal and community and policymaking groups to come together.
1. To provide a common forum to the delegates interested in presenting outputs of their applied research particularly in the emerging and cross-cutting fields which are relevant for developing countries.
2. To help identify action research needs for a sustainable future, and facilitate international networking for collaborative research.
3. To brainstorm on prevailing issues related to strategic planning and policy making for continuous and sustainable growth of developing countries.
We are anticipating large participation to make the conference more dynamic and output oriented through the professional expertise to meet the present day need for the better tomorrow. This conference seeks to explore working relationship among the participants to create an ambience for exchange and cooperation of ideas and resources. The conference will involve academia, professionals, technical, managerial and policymaking groups to come together. Each group will synthesize the outcome of the topics discussed for the national and international relevance to link knowledge and experience to each of the working groups.
There are also opportunities for sponsors to this conference. Organizations can also sponsor participants for presenting their papers and participation to the conference. It is planned to create a system to give due credit and recognition to contributors of both content and funding in proportion to their relative contribution. The contributors of content will obviously be recognized in the program. The contributors of grant funds will be acknowledged in an appropriate manner on the program documentation and on the web site.

This 3-day conference will include keynote speeches, audio-visual presentations, panel discussions, workshops and technical field visits. Authors are encouraged to submit papers in the conference sub-themes that would share knowledge relevant for sustainable development of the developing countries.
The Conference will focus and deliberate on the following sub-themes, which is not necessarily an exhaustive list:

3. Information and Communications Technology for Sustainable Development
4. Climate Change, Mitigation and Adaptation
5. Environmental and Natural Resources for Water and Food Security
6. Disaster Risk Reduction Management, Recovery and Rehabilitation
7. Hydropower and Renewable Energy Technologies
8. Innovation Management
9. Gender and Development as Social Integration Management
10. Peace Building and Conflict Management
11. Banking and Finance
12. Globalization
There is particular interest in developing countries for papers, which address the knowledge management. As part of efforts to maintain and raise the high quality of papers, the papers should be 6-8 pages academic or practitioner based papers with data and analysis component and/or practitioner based upon case studies, local technology (a selection of these papers will be recommended for publication in an appropriate journal). The accepted abstract of the papers will be published in a conference preprint proceedings. In addition to the oral papers, we are encouraging alternative presentation formats such as poster presentation. Only papers, which are presented in the conference, will be published in the Conference Proceedings to be published later on.
The Organizing Committee invites practitioners, policy makers, academics and researchers to submit papers describing recent work in the themes listed above and related subjects. Authors wishing to contribute papers for the conference are invited to submit an extended abstract of approximately 500 words. It may include a few figures, tables or illustrations. The abstract should be typed in MS Word format using single line spacing, font types Times Roman and font size of 11 points. The extended abstract must be submitted no later than 31 July 2009. While submitting abstract, please mention the affiliation and contact address(es) of author(s). The scientific committee will review the abstracts and select papers for inclusion in the technical sessions. Abstracts will be reviewed and judged on the basis of relevance, clarity, originality and technical content and completeness. Authors whose papers are accepted will be notified by 15 August 2009 along with the guidelines for completing manuscript of the full paper. The deadline for the submission of the full paper is 15 September 2009.
Publication of Conference papers
Registered participants will receive a bound volume of conference proceedings and a CD containing electronic version of the papers in full.

Registration begins from Monday, 02 March 2009.
The registration fee for participants is USD 300 for international participants, USD 200 for AIT Alumnus and SAARC country participants, and NPR 6000 for local participants from Nepal.
Early Registration (by 31 May 2009): USD 250 for international participants, USD 150 for AIT Alumnus and SAARC country participants and NPR 4,000 for participants from Nepal.
There is also a possibility of sponsorship for participation. Sponsorship provided will cover conference fees, travel allowances and/or subsistence for up to 50 delegates. Participants from the neighboring South Asian countries are particularly encouraged to apply for this sponsorship. For full sponsorship criteria, please consult the conference website frequently.
